Welcome aboard our innovative NEMO clean-up raft in Düsseldorf's media port. Spend exciting hours on the Rhine with your youth group or school class and make a valuable contribution to water protection.

Our project

The media harbor is full of various types of underwater trash, such as tires, e-scooters and bicycles. At the same time, large quantities of wood and plastic waste are driven into the port every day. Many of these substances are harmful to aquatic animals, us humans and nature. That's why we clean up together!
In addition, we provide practical knowledge on the topics of clean water, waste prevention and nautics. At the end of our port expedition, we understood why waste does not belong in water and nature and can pass on our knowledge to others.

Age: 10—18 years
duration: 4 hours, expandable with additional modules on request
Group size: max. 24 children/adolescents including caregiver (12 on a multifloat, 12 on a support ship)
costs: none (made possible by our cooperation partners)
Location: Marina Düsseldorf in the media harbor

The program

Welcome to the marina (approx. 30 minutes):
  • Briefing on the NEMO raft and the nautical safety measures on board. Allocation of ship crews.

  • Little knotting: The team learns three important knots and techniques for mooring the NEMO raft and setting fenders (protective devices). Exercise “Man overboard.”

Introduction to environmental topics (approx. 30 minutes):
  • How does the waste get into the water and what effects does this have on the underwater world in the media harbor?

  • Why are clean rivers important for the oceans?

  • How does plastic become microplastic and what does that mean for marine animals and us humans?

Expedition in the media port (approx. 2 hours):
  • With an underwater scanner, we locate garbage at the bottom of the harbor and recover it using the lifting equipment on the NEMO raft.

  • Check the plant islands with their water-purifying roots, information about this.

End in the marina (approx. 1 hour):
  • Sorting plastic waste, shredding and shredding driftwood, preparing for disposal.

  • Clean the NEMO raft.

  • drinks and snacks.

  • Interesting facts about the Rhine and its tributaries.

  • Final round and certificate of participation.
