With their root ball, which is up to one and a half meters long, the plants absorb excess nutrients from the water and thus prevent algae from growing. They are also a great habitat for fish and microorganisms — the shady areas are particularly valuable on hot summer days. At Medienhafen, we now even have a breeding island for ducks and other waterfowl. The plant islands can swim thanks to the lightweight pumice gravel made from recycled glass — a good thing all round.
We would like to thank Asahi Kasei Europe for sponsoring the first floating garden consisting of 35 plant islands in Düsseldorf's media port. If you would like to find out more about this innovative form of water pollution and greening, we would be happy to advise you. Or simply become a sponsor for plant islands on a body of water near you!
